Taal Volcano
Tagaytay is particularly famous for the Taal Volcano. Although often described as one of the smallest volcanoes in the world, it is actually one of the largest. The entire Tagaytay ridge is the crater's edge and the Taal Lake is the caldera of the volcano. The little 'volcano' you see in the centre of the lake is merely a 'vent'!
Taal volcano is known as the largest island within a lake on an island within a lake on an island!
One of Taal's greatest eruptions in recent years was in January 1911. Many local farmers were killed by the blast, and a tidal wave across the lake drowned those in boats too. Over 1300 people died in just one day.
1977 saw the most recent eruption of Taal Volcano, although an earlier eruption in 1969 was the last one to release lava.
Taal Volcano is still a very active volcano and is constantly being monitored by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Having a tour on Taal Volcano is only possible when the alert level is below 2.
We offer Day Excursions to Tagaytay and Taal Volcano, from Manila, although it is possible to stay at any from a choice of fine hotels in the area.
