Daraga Church, or, to give it its proper title, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria (Our Lady of the Gate), is a fine example of religious architecture in Albay Province, Bicol, sitting as it does on a hill above the bustling town.
The centuries-old church was declared a Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2007. The church then underwent restoration work to preserve its facade which was deteriorating because of its age.
Exposure to the elements for more than 230 years had eroded the architectural details of the facade, which was formed from blocks of volcanic rock. The protective lime coating which was applied will save the church's exterior appearance for future generations and in time will return to its original look.
Daraga Church features in most of our Albay Tours.
